CAring Committee News -february 2010

Just look all of the people on our weekly Misheberach list. Have you ever wondered if our Or Ami community will ever be healthy? As chair of the Caring Committee, I have been wondering how we could best put into practice the powerful Jewish teachings on the preservation of health; and into my life, came an answer.
But first, what are those “teachings”? They are simple and at the same time complicated. The Torah and Rabbinic literature is full of directives for hygiene and the Jewish principle of pikuach nefesh, the duty to preserve a human life, is paramount.
Since maintaining a healthy and sound body is among the ways of G-d -- for one cannot understand or have any knowledge of the Creator if he is ill -- therefore he must avoid that which harms the body and accustom himself to that which is helpful and helps the body become stronger.
Maimonides, Mishneh Torah, Hilchot Deot 4:1
This implies that Judaism puts a priority on the prevention of disease. Jewish mysticism also approaches health holistically. The soul, the psyche, and the body are all aspects of the same thing.
By the same token, one is not supposed to remain passive if he/she sees another person in danger. For example, the Sages indicate that if one sees a person drowning or being attacked by robbers, he/she should do everything possible to rescue the person. This applies to good health as well. One must not withhold information which can save another from death or any type of damage.
Knowing all of this, new member, Alan Arkava, RN came into my life. He can not sit idly by. Compassionate and highly educated he has a desire to serve our community. He is available to provide confidential and supportive assistance to our congregants. As a cancer survivor, medical professional and all around mensch, he can bring together the medical, spiritual and social dimensions of healing found in the Jewish tradition.
